Users learning Turkish with the ReBALKAN word game

Learning Turkish can create valuable opportunities for people who want to live, study, work or travel in Türkiye and communicate with Turkish-speaking communities. One of the first challenges is learning enough everyday vocabulary to understand and express basic ideas. ReBALKAN has now launched Turkish learning content within its developing language-learning system to make this process more engaging.

Start learning Turkish with ReBALKAN

Instead of asking users to memorise words only from static lists, ReBALKAN combines Turkish vocabulary with images, audio, answer choices and letter-building exercises. Vocabulary practice therefore becomes an interactive activity rather than a passive memorisation task.

Users of the Turkish, English, Macedonian and Albanian interfaces can access the Turkish learning section. Instructions are presented in the selected interface language while the exercises focus on Turkish words.

Why learn Turkish?

Turkish is used by large communities in Türkiye, the Balkans, Europe and many other parts of the world. Learning it may support communication in everyday life, education, tourism, employment and international trade.

  • It can make daily communication easier while living, studying or working in Türkiye.
  • It may provide greater independence during tourist and business travel.
  • It can help users communicate with Turkish-speaking customers, companies and business partners.
  • It supports access to Turkish educational resources, news and online content.
  • It helps learners enjoy Turkish films, television, music and literature in their original language.
  • It can support social, cultural and commercial connections between Türkiye and the Balkans.

Practise through three word games

The ReBALKAN learning system currently offers three game formats that allow users to encounter the same Turkish vocabulary in different ways.

1. Choose the correct Turkish word for the image

An image is displayed with four Turkish word options. The player selects the word that correctly represents the image, strengthening the connection between the object and its Turkish name.

2. Find the correct image for the Turkish word

A Turkish word is displayed or played as audio. The user then chooses the matching picture from nine options. This activity brings reading, listening, comprehension and visual memory together.

3. Build the Turkish word from mixed letters

The letters of a Turkish word are presented in mixed order. Some rounds may also include extra trap letters. The player must select and arrange the correct letters to complete the word represented by the image.

Discover the Turkish alphabet

The Turkish alphabet contains 29 letters. It is based on the Latin alphabet and includes the distinctive letters Ç, Ğ, I, İ, Ö, Ş and Ü. The dotted İ and dotless I are separate letters and represent different sounds.

Turkish has a largely regular relationship between spelling and pronunciation. Practising a word together with its audio and visual meaning can help learners recognise these sounds and remember the correct spelling.

Turn vocabulary practice into a friendly competition

Regular repetition is important when learning a new language. ReBALKAN supports this process with scores, levels and leaderboards. Users can collect points by completing games, monitor their progress and participate in a friendly competition with other learners.

Words are organised into categories, while the difficulty gradually increases from level one to level five. Learners can therefore begin with common everyday vocabulary and progress towards more challenging Turkish words.

Is Turkish difficult to learn?

Like every language, Turkish requires consistent study and repetition. Its sound and spelling system is nevertheless relatively regular. A letter generally produces a similar sound in different words, which can make correctly written words easier to pronounce.

Turkish creates many meanings by adding suffixes to words. This structure may initially feel unfamiliar, but it becomes more understandable as learners recognise common roots and suffix patterns. Short and regular daily practice can be more sustainable than occasional intensive study.

What does the system offer today?

The current Turkish module primarily focuses on vocabulary, image association, word recognition, spelling, listening to pronunciation and repetition. Users can practise words in different categories, participate in the available games and follow their scores.

A long-term learning path from A1 to C1

The ReBALKAN language-learning system is under active development. Future stages are planned to include Turkish grammar, suffixes, tenses, sentence construction, question patterns, listening comprehension, reading, writing and everyday conversation exercises.

The long-term objective is to develop a structured system capable of supporting learners from the introductory A1 level towards C1. These additional functions are development objectives and are not all currently active.
